The library will be closed on Tuesday, November 3 in observance of Election Day.

Using the Library

Residents of Carlstadt may apply for a free library card.  Proof of residency must be shown at the time of registration.  The following are acceptable forms of identification:

  • Driver’s license issued by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission
  • Non-Driver Identification Card issued by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission
  • Property tax bill or deed with matching photo identification
  • Utility bill (PSE&G, water or cable) with matching photo identification
  • Telephone bill (landline for residence) with matching photo identification
  • Lease Agreement with matching photo identification
  • You may apply for a library card in person or begin the application process online.  Online applicants will be contacted by telephone when the card is ready.

Juveniles ages 5 and over may be issued library cards.  The parent/guardian must present valid identification and co-sign the minor child’s application.  The child must be present at the Library at the time of application.  The parent/guardian is responsible for the return of all materials charged out to the child and financially responsible for all fines and replacement costs incurred.

When you apply for the right to use the Library, you promise to abide by all rules and policies, to take good care of materials borrowed in your name, to pay any incurred fines or damage fees, and to give prompt notification of any changes to your phone number or address.

If the original card is lost or stolen, there is a $3.00 replacement fee for a new card. Your card provides borrowing privileges at all member libraries of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS). A total of 50 items may be borrowed on your card.  Loan periods, overdue fines, and borrowing limits on specific types of items are determined by each member library.   You may return items to the Carlstadt Library or to any library in the BCCLS consortium. You may return items to the book drop outside the front door of the Library.

Your library card will grant you access to materials listed in our library catalog, our digital collections, and our subscription research databases (link to Research A to Z).

Your valid library card must be presented to borrow materials.  Library cards expire in three years.  At that time, you will need to bring your card to the library with proof of residency to renew it.

Courtesy Cards
Anyone who works in Carlstadt, and who does not live in a town with a BCCLS library, is eligible for a courtesy card. Identification from the employer is required that shows the employer’s name, address, and phone number, and indicates that the individual is employed by the Carlstadt employer. Identification with the applicant’s home address must also be shown. Courtesy cardholders may borrow materials owned by the Carlstadt Library.  Courtesy cardholders are not eligible for access to digital collections or materials from other BCCLS libraries.
